CLINICAL SKILLS AND PRACTICUM
The CLINICAL SKILLS AND PRACTICUM is a pivotal and exciting time in a student’s career. You’re finally putting all the theory learned during those arduous hours on the computer into practice. You will also start to learn and sharpen your clinical skills. This is a prerequisite for all degree courses such as the Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral programs in Naturopathy and Holistic Medicine.
What is clinical practicum?
The clinical practicum can be broken down into two parts: direct clinical observation and direct clinical experience.
What is Direct Clinical Observation?
Per the Da Vinci Institute of Holistic Medicine requirements, all students must complete at least one week of direct observation in a Holistic Medicine training center to marry the theory with practice. This is normally conducted in real-time with live patients in a clinical setting such as the Da Vinci Holistic Health Center in Larnaca, Cyprus or a similar training Center in some other part of the world to suit student’s needs.
The student will sit in clinic with their supervisor and observe, take notes, ask questions and observe the operation of various diagnostic and healing modalities. This learning experience is next to none for quickly gaining the clinical tools and learning protocols to begin implementing in your own clinical practice.
What is Direct Clinical Experience?
With the direct clinical experience students spend time either with their supervisor or alone learning hands-on skills in diagnosing and implementing bespoke treatment programmes based on the information elicited from the patient.
Initially, the student will act as the patient and the IDEL Diagnostic Programme will be implemented on themselves by their supervisor.
This is an excellent way of taking a person’s health issues, many of which will have no identified causative factors and putting on your “Sherlock Holmes” hat and acting as the detective.
This type of holistic diagnostics is quite rare in many clinical settings around the world, so you will be fortunate to absorb a rich knowledge-base for identifying underlying causative factors as well as the pathogenesis of disease.
It has taken many years to develop the IDEL Diagnostic Programme for doing all this and more – IDEL is the acronym for ‘Identify’ and ‘Eliminate.’ Without removing the root causes it is literally impossible to cure chronic diseases. The only thing that will happen is that one symptom will be suppressed while another one appears – this is the progression of chronic disease.
When do I start the clinical practicum?
Most students leave the clinical practicum to the end of their studies. This makes sense as it is best to study the modules first in order to get a good theoretical basis in order to facilitate the understanding of the IDEL Diagnostic Programme and all of its components.
Some students may come in earlier, usually during the middle of the second year, but this is rarer. This can be discussed with the Administrative Director.
As soon as you are ready to come in for the clinical practicum, write to us and let us know and we can begin organizing this important part of your training.
